LOCATED in Heywood, on the Uniting Church premises, is a group of ladies with a good eye for quilting.
The Fitzroy River Quilters are a group of 35 community members with an interest in sewing, crochet, and being entirely creative – coming together to provide some warmth to locals and even others around the world.
For 30 years, they have made quilt blankets and donated to local police and families, kids in foster care in the Glenelg Shire, the hospital and to those impacted by natural disasters in other corners of Australia.
Besides quilts, other made and donated items are library bags, laundry bags, trauma teddies, penguin jumpers, premature baby beanies, crochet blankets for seniors, and other care items such as for the Days for Girls International program.
Each member can have a cause they will get crafting for.
Jeannette Saunders for example had had made 50 bonnets and donated them to the Royal Women’s Hospital.
“You'd be surprised how much talent we've got in our whole organisation. We have knitters, we've got crocheters, we've got sewers and people who make scrapbooking cards,” president Wallie Goossens said.
“We had a Mother's Day stall this year and the proceeds we got from that we buy material and other equipment we need to make more quilts.
“We try and buy stuff, but we're always looking for people who may have material in their cupboards or who've got wool in their cupboards if they want to donate it.”
The Quilters have five different group sessions a month, called paper craft, lace group, Saturday stitches, swiggle swaggle and then the weekly Thursday group.
Members subscribe $25 annually and can attend whichever group they’d like that month for $5.
The money goes toward equipment, materials and rent for their current premises at the Uniting Church who took them in after they could no longer gather at the old Heywood school hall.
The first two group attendances are free for those who are interested.
A committee meeting is held every first Wednesday of the month.
The Fitzroy River Quilters are welcoming anyone who is interested to join the group and are open to teaching those the art of quilting if they ask.
Ms Goossens said those interested can call 0448 822 881 if they would like to join or are interested in learning a few skills.
“We're all happy to help people learn how to knit, crochet or do embroidery,” she said.
