A “win-win” situation

IT might be a cliché, but a project that took place out Cape Nelson way on Friday certainly did merit the phrase.

“This is a win-win for both of us.”

So said Friends of Cape Nelson Landcare Coastcare president Lynn Murrell when several Rotary Club of Portland members came out to the Picnic Hill reserve to clear some overgrowth at the popular tourist spot.

The entrance at the foot of the track that climbs up the hill had become completely overgrown.

“They (visitors) couldn’t find the track,” Mr Murrell said.

“I’ve been trimming it every year but it just gets out of hand.”

The group got a grant to get the work done, but after a committee member proposed an idea the Rotary Club of Portland was approached instead.

For the club is about to make its seventh annual trip to the village of Koroipita in Fiji (near the nation’s second largest city Lautoka), where Rotarian will help build houses.

President Peter Taylor said the Landcare group would make a donation for the services on Picnic Hill which would be used in Fiji – the Rotarians will go from July 16 to 28.

Fellow club member, and main organiser of the trip, Erin Barker said the club bought items in Lautoka for the village, so the economy there benefitted.

“We don’t know how many houses we’ll build until we get there,” she said.

“We get put into working gangs and we do whatever they’re doing.

“It really is just amazing to go and do it.”

The club won’t just be taking money and their skills, however – there’s also the matter of some women’s underclothing.

“Each person that goes over takes a minimum of 30 bras, even the men,” Ms Barker said.

“I’m a breast care nurse and I do a session with the women there.

“It gives all the women in Portland a chance to clean out their drawers and buy some new ones.

“We’ve got at least 250 to take so far.”

And with the spinoff of Portlanders replenishing their undergarments, that might be another “win-win” that includes the local economy as well…
