Rhythm2Recovery helping students learn

TARRINGTON Lutheran School (TLS) has been funded through Brophy’s School Focus Youth Service for three staff members to train in the Rhythm2Recovery drumming program, and run a pilot program in Term 3.

TLS wellbeing officer, Jane Crowe, said Rhythm2Recovery is a wellbeing program that uses rhythmic music and movement to engage TLS students in conversations that may be confrontational in spoken word, but much more engaging using drumming activities.

“The drumming activities that we use open up opportunities to discuss topics in an engaging and fun way, but also allows deeper conversations to take place without it being too confronting,” she said.

“The aim of the program is for the students to build their social and emotional skills and be able to foster positive relationships with their peers.”

The school’s Parents, Friends and Staff Association contributed by donating six of their djembe drums.

A selected group of Grade 5 and 6 students are taking part in the pilot program this term, but the school is looking forward to being able to run it in future years following the program.

Ms Crowe said TLS holds strong belief in a holistic approach to learning and identifying that each student’s wellbeing influences their ability to grow and learn.

“Providing wellbeing support in a child’s primary school journey is beneficial in improving their learning, social and emotional development, building their resilience and confidence and creativity,” she said.
