A NUMBER of Glenelg Regional Committee members have accused some conservationists of making false and misleading statements aimed at wrecking many engineering projects. Committee secretary, Mr. Neville Baldy, in a hard hitting attack, claimed that conservationists were having “a field day” and that some of them were fanatics. He told Tuesday’s committee meeting in Hamilton that many statements made by conservationists could never be substantiated. Mr. Baldy said it was amazing how almost every engineering project threatened flora and fauna that was the only type of its kind in the world. Mr. Baldy’s remarks were supported by other committee members including divisional forester, Mr. J. D. Gillespie, although most of his remarks were made “off the record”.

TIGERS’ edge over St. Mary’s as the top team in Hamilton men’s basketball could come to an end in tonight’s A grade second semi-final. St. Mary’s usually test Tigers all the way and then lose by a narrow margin. But I’m tipping the Saints can go on with the job this time. The key to the game is likely to be Chuck Loomer and “Dutchy” Orval around the basket. If these two players can penetrate the solid defence of Tigers, then St. Mary’s will have their best ever chance of knocking off the top team. Loomer is a brilliant player around the court and in recent weeks has been right on target with his shooting. Orval is not as steady as Loomer, but he represents height under the basket and can be a fine player on his night.

HAMILTON contractor, Judy and Norm Kenny, will continue – at least for the next week – with a recycling service in Southern Grampians Shire after a change of heart by the shire. The shire decided to back track from a recommendation before Wednesday night’s meeting to award the recycling contract to Warrnambool firm Baton’s for a tender of $94,586. At that meeting, council decided it would accept no tender. On Thursday morning, the Kennys met council to thrash out the future of their involvement with the recycling service. The Kennys have asked council for some financial contribution and a guarantee the service is theirs for a period of time – and have given council until next Friday to reply. “It’s going to take them a little while to consider it, so we have given a week,” she said.

HAMILTON has brought in five players for the important Western Border Football League match against Casterton today. Elusive rover, David Hando, will make a welcome return to the Magpies’ line-up, which has missed his zip around the packs in its last two games. Angus Brown and Grant Bethune have been recalled from the under-18s and will be joined by consistent reserves performer, Andrew Button, and Julian Dickeson, who has been named on interchange. Versatile youngsters, Ryan Gerring and Brock Uebergang, will return to the under-18 team while Aaron Talbot will again miss because of a hamstring injury. Utility Sean Walsh’s availability was uncertain as he was due to face the Western Border Football League tribunal last night on a striking charge.
