All smiles at the Kyeema Spring Sale

THANKS to the support of the community, it was another great Spring Sale at Kyeema Support Services.

Despite some gusty and damp weather, the community turned out in huge numbers, with the sale raising $30,000.

The funds raised will go toward putting together an outdoor kitchen, including a working sink and furniture for dining in the area.

“We've had this area ready for a kitchen. It’s had new floorboards, and it's had a ramp put in so it's more accessible,” Kyeema Support Services day programs coordinator and team leader Barb South said.

“The area is over near where the plants were being sold. So, we're slowly doing that up.

“When we have extra people here, we usually have a barbecue, and now we'll have a special area for it.”

Ms South coordinated the day with 90 volunteers who were made up of staff, their family and friends in the community.

She said one of the highlights from the day was the petting zoo, which gave community members the chance to cuddle puppies, rabbits, lambs, and pet a pony and chickens.

Another hit was the Devonshire tea prepared by Isobel Bennett and the Indian cuisine by Tania Gracias, with both selling out.

Ms Bennett made 23 dozen scones the morning of the sale, with keen attendees lining up to enjoy them.

“Issy was here at five o'clock in the morning on Saturday making fresh scones and because Tania (Gracias), who had spent three days cooking Indian food, didn't want her to be here by herself, she came in at five o'clock as well and kept her company,” Ms South said.

Besides the food there were 30 market stalls, showbags, face painting, live music and plenty of plants.

Numbers were slightly down compared to last year, but Kyeema Support Services were more than thankful for the community’s support.

“We didn't have the crowd that we had probably in the previous year, but the previous year was sunny,” Ms South said.

“It really does come down to the weather (…) more people will come out and they'll hang around instead of grabbing what they need and heading off.

“We still had fabulous community support.”
