A ‘Girls Day In’ cancer fundraiser in Portland has thrown the doors open to the men as well, to help purchase a new treatment machine for Portland District Health.
This will be the sixth time Organiser Lou Armistead has held one of the events, starting with an event in the kitchen for her 50th birthday, and has grown over 13 years to now a four hour event at the RSL memorial Bowling Club, featuring live music, raffles and door prizes.
The event will be on Sunday, October 22, from 1pm-5pm.
Originally she raised money for one of the bigger charities, but has since changed to ensure the money helps people in the area.
“This one came about from a pretty random thought, I heard this band (Buzzard Breath) playing at the bowls club and thought they'd be good for a fundraiser, so I've just sort of created another one,” she said.
“I met with the hospital to ask was on the wishlist for the breast cancer unit up there.”
High on the list was a SOZO machine, worth around $13,000.
“After post surgery, with breast cancer patients, their lymph nodes can be affected and so people then have the symptoms of lymphoma - this machine is connected to that,” Ms Armistead said.
“At the moment the patients that are going to use this machine travel to Warrnambool and sometimes they have to use it for six or nine months after surgery.”
A worthy cause, but Ms Armistead said they need to start selling more tickets, at $60 a head, to reach their goal.
“The local businesses have been absolutely fantastic with donating the vouchers, there’s just been no hesitation in supporting us,” she said.
“We’ve also had some major sponsors come on and donate some money as well, so I really want to get this across the line for everyone who has helped so far.
“I’m sure it will be a great day.”
