Referendum graffiti removal proves costly

THE Yes voter who graffitied “DID U VOTE “NO”? WELL, IGNORANCE IS BLISS.X.” on multiple buildings and sites in Hamilton on Saturday night after the Voice referendum results came in is still yet to be charged.

Much of the vandalism committed by Matthew Talbot, 52, of Hamilton, can still be seen around town, with some partially washed off and others completely removed.

The Southern Grampians Shire Council (SGSC) said they discovered that the graffiti paint used was actually much harder to remove than they initially thought.

“Council had two buildings in Hamilton’s CBD damaged with graffiti on the weekend,” SGSC chief executive, Tony Doyle said.

“The paint used for the graffiti cannot be removed with the methods generally used by council and have needed repainting.

“The buildings included the public toilets outside of IGA and the old Walkers building. The graffiti has already been painted over by council, which cost about $1500 to complete.”

A Hamilton Police representative said Mr Talbot has been interviewed about the incidents but as of Friday morning has not yet been charged.
