SIX local Country Fire Authority (CFA) tankers attended two separate fire incidents in Hamilton on Sunday afternoon.
Both were initially controlled fires but got away according to CFA District 5 acting chief, Rainer Kiessling.
He said the first call out was at 3.15pm in Coffey Street, to a tree fire with units from Hamilton, North Hamilton Rural, Grange Rural and Bainbridge Fire Brigades attending that involved around 10 CFA members.
“It was quickly brought under control,” he said.
“I think it was someone burning some rubbish that got away.”
Mr Kiessling said then three units attending to that fire were called away to a separate incident on Lewis Street at 3.37pm.
“That was a grass and scrub fire,” he said.
“A call came in and some of the tankers went to a bonfire that had got out of control. It was under control by 3.50pm.”
He said fortunately, neither of the fires were a threat to any structures.
“This time of year, as people increase burning off activity, we encourage everyone to have suitable fire suppression plans in place, prior to burning off,” Mr Kiessling said.
“With the onset of the fire danger period scheduled for late November, people must take care - especially if the weather is hot and windy.”
