Sentencing for Caravan Park bashing case adjourned

THE case of a brutal bashing involving two Hamilton men has been adjourned for a plea hearing for January 25, 2024.

Wayne Dennert, 58, pleaded not guilty in the Warrnambool County Court in October to intentionally and recklessly causing serious injury and was listed for sentencing yesterday, however, the matter has now been adjourned.

A witness who said he saw Mr Dennert repeatedly beating a victim with a metal pole in the alleged attack said it was one of the most brutal things he had ever seen.

The court previously heard from a witness who described hearing screams for help from the victim, Hamilton man Brendan Nancarrow, who was left with multiple broken bones after he had allegedly been attacked by Mr Dennert.

The witness was staying with his family at the Hamilton Caravan Park in Shakespeare Street during April 2021 when he witnessed the accused standing over Mr Nancarrow holding a metal pole.

Mr Dennert said he acted in self-defence when he believed Mr Nancarrow was breaking into his caravan.
