LAST Tuesday was International Volunteer Day (IVD) which is dedicated to celebrating the hardest working volunteers in local communities and there are none more worthy than those from the Country Fire Authority (CFA).
The theme among CFA members this year was “If everyone did” emphasising the power that all people have to make positive change.
Hamilton Fire Brigade captain, Malcolm Anderson, said the best part about being a CFA volunteer was providing help to people when they needed it the most.
“We are often the first emergency responders a person makes contact with, on potentially one of their worst days so being able to help is very rewarding,” he told The Spectator.
Mr Anderson said the teamwork aspect of his role was enjoyable and loved being connected to his community through this avenue.
“Benefits to the community (include) rapid assistance when needed, skilled support and potentially life-saving support,” he said.
“(Also) understanding things like weather so I know when not to go fishing, navigation, first aid, teamwork and leadership skills.”
The Hamilton Fire Brigade is currently recruiting new members and it’s a way for people to give back to the community while having some fun.
“It is challenging and there is a bit of training needed to do what we do, but the CFA provides all your training at flexible times,” Mr Anderson said.
“All our response gear is supplied so (it’s) a low cost to individuals … (if) interested, check out our website or Facebook page.”
CFA chief officer, Jason Heffernan, said there were almost 52,000 CFA volunteers who made great contributions to the public.
“If everyone did what our volunteers do, imagine the impact it would have locally and collectively,” he said.
“Whether it be responding in times of need, engaging with communities about fire prevention or supporting causes and local fundraising activities, our passionate volunteers stand ready to protect the lives and properties of Victorians with tireless commitment and dedication.
“Happy International Volunteer Day to all our volunteers and thank you for being part of the CFA family.”
