MANY local students were delighted after the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) released first round offers on Thursday morning for 2024 courses at universities, TAFE institutes, and independent tertiary colleges.
2023 Lonsdale House Captain at Monivae College, Abbey Hill, was offered a Bachelor of Primary School Teaching at Deakin University in Geelong.
“I have always seen myself getting involved in teaching, as I have had family members involved in teaching which has been a big driver in becoming a teacher – and since I was in Prep, I have loved all my teachers also,” she said.
“I will be taking a gap year and working at HILAC (Hamilton Indoor Leisure and Aquatic Centre) to try and save some money before I move away.
“I actually didn’t know what to expect and they said the offers weren’t coming in until later (Thursday) so I kind of forgot about it and then when I saw that I was accepted it was a nice surprise.
“I am hoping to get a degree out of the course which will take four years so that I can become a good, well trained teacher.
“I am looking forward to meeting new people and becoming independent as well as living in Geelong will be really cool.”
Another 2023 Monivae College student, Makenzie Annett, was accepted into a double degree of Nursing and Paramedicine at the Australian Catholic University in Ballarat.
“For a couple of years now I have wanted to do this course with the hopes of becoming a paramedic – in 2024 I will be taking a gap year and working at Robson’s Pharmacy in Hamilton before going to university in 2025,” she said.
“Before going into the exam period, I applied for an early guarantee position for my course which allowed me to be accepted into the course based on my Year 11 results and was lucky enough to be accepted.
“This made the wait for results and offers so much less stressful as I already knew I had a spot waiting for me – I hope to get lots of experience, education and memories out of the course and I look forward to making new lifelong friendships.”
Meanwhile 2023 Baimbridge College School Captain, Joseph Lehmann, has accepted an offer for a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at Latrobe University in Bundoora and will be commencing studies next year.
“Studying secondary teaching has always been a thought in the back of my mind but that seriously became the number one choice late in Year 11 (2022),” he said.
“The entire break over exams was the worst, from waiting for December 11 to roll around (ATAR day) to finding out offers was horrible but am very happy now that I have been accepted.
“I am hoping that the course will help prepare myself as best as it can for a long career in the education industry.
“I’m looking forward to a range of things from experiencing uni life and placement in such a different environment to meeting a range of different people.”
