A HAMILTON district truck driver and a child passenger had a lucky escape when the truck carrying haybales they were travelling in rolled on the Warrnambool-Penshurst Road on December 30.
Hamilton Police highway patrol unit Senior Constable, Tony Dumesny attended the single-vehicle rollover soon after 5pm between five to six kilometres south of Penshurst on the Warrnambool-Penshurst Road.
He said the south-bound prime mover and trailer had rolled to the east side of the road after rounding the bend.
“As it’s gone around the bend, something has happened - we are still looking into it,” Sen Const Dumesny said.
“Initial investigations are suggesting that there might have been a mechanical failure.”
Sen Const Dumesny confirmed there were two occupants in the truck, a Hamilton district man aged around 55 and a school-aged child.
“Fortunately, they were only shaken up and suffered only minor injuries,” he said.
“Ambulance did attend but the occupants were not taken to hospital.
“There's an ongoing investigation into the cause of the rollover.”
Anyone with information about the collision or dashcam footage is requested to contact the Hamilton police station on 5551 9100.
Sen Const Dumesny said it was a timely reminder for all drivers to take all possible care on the roads especially given that there is a lot of traffic about at present with people travelling long distances and on unfamiliar roads.
“We urge all drivers to be extra patient, plan your trips and expect the unexpected,” he said.
“Especially this time of year. Let’s try and start 2024 on the right foot.
“We just want everyone to arrive at their destination safely.”
