Over 1000 MRI patients in 1 year

IN the 12 months since it first arrived onsite, over 1000 patients have used the Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machine at Hamilton Base Hospital.

The arrival was a massive success for many in the community who had campaigned to have closer access to the advanced technology. Until its arrival, patients had to travel to Warrnambool or Ballarat.

The MRI provides advanced three-dimensional scans, typically of the spine, brain, and musculoskeletal systems. Diagnosticians use scans of the spine to check for issues like pinched nerves in the neck and lumbar. When it comes to the brain, the machine can detect multiple sclerosis, lesions, and evidence of strokes. It can also be helpful to understand injuries to joints, tendons and ligaments.

Chief Western Districts medical imaging technologist, Mark Lee, said “having the MRI machine in Hamilton allows for patients to receive their scans without the time and expense of travel to out of town MRI facilities, greatly improving patient comfort.

“We provide a modern, comfortable service with high quality images leading to the most accurate diagnosis.

“The short wait time for appointment and fast reporting turnaround allows for referring doctors to obtain vital information for early treatment and intervention.

“The MRI machine has been a valuable asset and investment to the local and greater Hamilton community.”

Western District Health Service chief executive, Rohan Fitzgerald, described the installation as a “remarkable milestone”.

“Treating over 1000 patients in the last 12 months is evidence of the incredible power of community spirit in the Southern Grampians Shire. This achievement was made possible by the generous support of hundreds of local individuals, businesses, and community groups. Their contributions have been invaluable and have changed the lives of many.”

He extended his gratitude to every person involved in the effort to bring MRI services to the region.
