Cavendish crushing it for over a century

IT’S no wonder Cavendish has its own festival celebrating the magnificent river red gum, with the small township nestled on the banks of the Wannon River lined with these splendid, majestic trees.

The Wannon River meanders through the town with the iconic Settlers’ Walk along the banks setting the historic tone lined with significant landmarks including the old gaol and the old Cavendish cemetery.

With a thriving footy and netball club, the Cavendish and District Tennis Association still going strong, and with a consortium owned pub, the Cavendish community is going great guns.

Long time local and former Cavendish Townscape Association president, Roger Edwards, said this year the town will host its third Red Gum Festival and will celebrate 100 years of the Soldiers’ Memorial Hall that was built in 1923 after the end of the First World War.

“There’s a lot going on - the town’s going well,” he said.

“The Bridge Café and the Cavendish pub - The Bunyip Hotel - are booming.

“We’ve still got the Cavendish Recreation Reserve with everything that’s going along with that - so yeah - the town is thriving.”
