THE Tyrendarra Agricultural Show’s farm and garden section are re-introducing the home-made honey class this year and senior steward Jennie Fischer is excited to see more entries.
Entries for the Tyrendarra Agricultural Show sections are rolling in, leading up to show day this Saturday, where items will be displayed and judged.
Classes in farm and garden include one cob corn, three apple cucumbers, biggest red tomato, heaviest zucchini, funniest carrot shape and plenty more.
Ms Fischer said there were more than 40 classes to enter.
“There's a whole range of classes that go from fruit to vegetables, herbs, eggs, honey, and a special section for kids as well, so it covers a whole range of things,” she said.
“There are two hardboiled egg categories. A best painted hardboiled egg that looks like a farm animal and best painted hardboiled egg that looks like an emoji.
“There's also the other one where they make animals, or something that looks like something else, out of fruit and veggies.
“This year there's the honey - I don't think was included for a little while, but it's back in the schedule again.”
“A very hotly contested class is the heaviest zucchini.”
For each item entered is a fee of $1, with the chance to win first or second prize. Best entries will also be awarded sashes.
First prize is $2, and second prize is $1.
There are particular prizes for locals living within 5 kilometres of the Tyrendarra Recreation reserve, and for those living outside the 5 kilometres.
Ms Fischer said this year has been more difficult and challenging for the Farm and Garden competition because of the weather.
“The season has been so challenging this year.
“Pumpkins will be difficult I think because it's been so late in the season that they've been able to be planted, and tomatoes too.
“Because it's been cold, wet and windy, it’s been more difficult and challenging.”
Sponsors for the section this year are Portland Admella's Fruit n Veg and Mr D. Gray.
Items can be entered February 9, the evening before the show, between 5pm to 7pm and must be accompanied by an entry form which can be found on the Tyrendarra Show website.
