PANYYABYR Landcare Group (PLG) is hosting a field day this Thursday for those who are interested in, and willing to learn about turning a farm dam into a small oasis in the middle of paddocks.
The event funded by the Coca Cola Project and Landcare Australia will begin in the morning at a normal farm dam, where PLG will use the funding received to turn a waterhole into a thriving and healthy ecosystem, with the soon-to-be clean water still available for their stock use.
The informative morning intends for attendants to hear from trained experts, nursery growers and water quality specialists, to speak on the whys and how-to for many questions relating to farm dams.
There will also be a great opportunity for participants to have a go themselves at planting aquatic plants, which can involve walking into the dam, so depending on the weather participants are encouraged to bring shorts and runners, or jumpers and gumboots.
Speaking on the day will be Habitat Creations director, Steve Haughton, on behalf of the family-owned company specialising in Conservation and Land Management, Landscaping, and plant supply to the broader landscaping industry.
Freshwater ecologist and Nature Glenelg Trust senior wetland egologist, Ayesha Burdett will also be speaking on the day, who has worked in the rivers and wetlands in Australia and the USA, studying the ecology of biological communities of seasonal wetlands, arid-land rivers and farming landscapes.
To finish the morning, attendants will visit Kerren and Dale Collins’ dam, ‘The Wash’, in Nareeb, to see what the outcome of the processes learnt looks like, finishing up with a BBQ lunch there to celebrate their hard-earned achievement.
The event is the first of three field days following this project, with future events based on setting up your stock water supply and planting native grassland species.
The field day will be held on Thursday, March 14 in Dunkeld from 9.30am to 1.30pm, at no cost to participants, with the starting location at “Coolanure’’, 7675 Glenelg Hwy, Dunkeld.
