Hamilton’s colourful quiet achievers

WHILE many Hamilton district residents are well acquainted with Mill Road and the old bluestone mill after which it is named and most of them also know the name Prestonholme Nurseries, only a few would be aware of the stunning colours on the inside of the glasshouses there.

Prestonholme Nurseries is an award-winning wholesale nursery supplying quality plants across an eleven-hundred-kilometre radius catchment area stretching from Port Lincoln, South Australia in the west, to Sydney in the north.

The business is run by third-generation owners, Peter and Alison Walter who took over from Peter’s father, Richard in 1997.

Two of Peter’s brothers, Rob and Tim were involved in the business until 2004, but nowadays, the business is focused on its highly successful Easy Colour brand which is to be found in independent retail nurseries and some chains such as Mitre 10 and Ritchies IGA.

Prestonholme Nurseries dates back to 1954 when patriarch, James Walter purchased the “Prestonholme” property with its homestead, outbuildings and bluestone mill which had traded as Grangeburn Steam Flour Mill from 1859 until its closure in 1892.
