Local ENT surgeon wins prestigious award

DEDICATED Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT) Specialist, Dr Anne Cass has received a distinguished award for excellence and service in ENT surgery from the Australian Society of Otolaryngology Head and Neck Surgery (ASOHNS).

Dr Cass graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1982 where she obtained her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

Since then she has been working in ENT for 35 years, and for the past 30 years has been serving the local community at the Hamilton Base Hospital.

“It’s an excellent hospital with excellent staff,” Dr Cass said.

She has also operated in Portland once a month, while every second week for two days she has worked at the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital where she has held the position as head of the clinic since 2004.

Dr Cass has said she believed in the importance of educating her patients about their conditions and treatment options.

“I think it’s important to treat your patients as if they were a member of your own family,” she said.

“The best thing about my job is getting people better, and the other staff I’ve had the privilege to work with.”

Dr Cass attended this year’s annual ASOHNS meeting in Perth where she was presented with an award for her excellence and service in ENT surgery; only two ENT surgeons in Australia are recognised each year.

“When I received the award, I thanked the people who have trained me, the people I’ve trained and my colleagues,” she said.

“It’s very satisfying to have won the award - it’s 35 years of working in the ENT department acknowledged.”
