Harmonised on Harmony Day

DECKED out in orange tuille, head bands, sequins and hiviz were students celebrating Harmony week at Tarrington Lutheran School (TLS) on Thursday, which was the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

It was a reminder to celebrate Australian multiculturalism, and the successful integration of migrants into the community.

Wearing orange was a way to show support and TLS principal, Jane Wiebusch was thrilled with the enthusiasm students showed in celebrating throughout the week acknowledging diversity and being inclusive.

“Harmony Week is a fantastic way to bring these sentiments to the fore,” she said.

“We care about the community.

“TLS is a place that actively seeks to build a community where all belong and feel connected.

“We also want our young people to embrace and connect with the richness and diversity in both their broader local community and our wonderful multicultural national community.”

Ms Wiebusch said nurturing relationships underpinned by TLS’ values of Respect, Integrity and Service was the core of their school’s community.

“Teaching our students to appreciate and celebrate our cultural backgrounds, our unique and individual strengths and abilities are critical to maintain the positive relationships which ensure everyone truly belongs,” she said.

“It’s about consistent and authentic conversations integrated through all their learning.”

The Department of Home Affairs leads the national celebrations for Harmony Week to recognise diversity and inclusion through various activities that take place during the entire week.

Harmony Week is celebrated during the week (Monday, March 18 to Sunday, March 24).

Since 1999, more than 80,000 Harmony Week events have been held in childcare centres, schools, community groups, churches, businesses and federal, state and local government agencies across Australia.
