EVERY year the Heywood Lions Club holds a vast auction that never fails to delight bargain hunters.
On Sunday the area between the river and the football field in Heywood became a vast field of bargains as row after row of donated items was lined up.
And it was one of the best auctions yet.
This year the action kicked off at 11am, but due to the large number of items the bidding was still going well into the evening and didn’t finish until after 7pm.
Graeme Bond from the Lions Club said, “it was the largest auction the Lions Club has ever run – it was absolutely enormous”.
The money raised goes straight back into supporting hospitals, schools, community projects and other charitable organisations.
The event is supported by hard working volunteers and items are donated by the local community.
Everything from trailers of firewood to furniture, portable generators, household items, bikes and even cars is available to be auctioned. And as with any auction there is often no telling if an item will be hotly contested, or a bargain.
In total there was some 1400 items sold compared to around 680 last year.
Mr Bond paid tribute to auctioneer Bruce Lowenthall who was ably assisted by Tony Nash over what was to prove an extremely long and demanding day.
The Lions barbecue also set a record profit selling more sausages and hamburgers than ever before with hard working volunteers kept busy from 9am to 7pm.
Mr Bond thanked all the volunteers who worked so hard to make the auction run seamlessly, members of the community who donated items and all those who supported the biggest auction yet.
