Youth Resource Centre name chosen

PLANS for the proposed youth centre in central Hamilton continue to progress into real-world outcomes as a successful recent community forum had over 2000 people view the livestream and a decision regarding a new name was made.

The driving force behind the venture at 42 Thompson Street, local, LeeAnn Elmes was pleased to report on the forum, saying it “went really well” with its goal to letting the community know more of the details.

“(It) was amazing and I really want to thank the community for their support,” she said.

“We just wanted to get our ideas out.

“We have a name for the Youth Resource Centre. It is called Stable Ground Hamilton Youth Resource Centre.”

Alongside the ongoing work to establish the facility, Ms Elmes said she also decided recently to run for council when elections are held later this year.

“I think council need a bit of a shake up,” she said.

“I’ve heard from a couple of people that in town, that council needs to have a bit of new blood and a bit of a new voice.

“From what I’ve also heard a lot of things in town have been squashed because of council over the years … big, big things (that could’ve) potentially propelled Hamilton on further than where it is now.”

She said her ongoing youth centre work was also a factor.

“I just want to see a voice for the youth,” she said.

“There is no voice for them in this town.”

But overall, she was happy the Youth Resource Centre was getting closer to becoming a reality.

“I am so excited and there is so much more to come.”
