HAMILTON artist, Jamie Donaldson Williams was pleased to have his work highlighted in the 2024 ArtX Regional exhibition when he was announced winner of the Provincial Media Award.
The Studio44Chaucer artist captured the eye of Provincial Media’s managing director, Garry Flanigan and managing editor, Jon Zabiegala with his artwork ‘Frida’ from almost 90 entries.
Mr Flanigan described Jamie’s artwork as “colourful and complex, with different textures and mediums”, which made the piece standout among other entries.
Coordinated by genU, ArtX Regional for the past 16 years has supported artists who identify as living with disability or a history of mental illness to gain recognition for their creative efforts.
ArtX Regional organisers expanded entries this year beyond the Geelong region and were delighted that talented Studio44Chaucer artists including Jamie embraced the opportunity to enter.
Although Jamie couldn’t make it to the award presentation, he visited Rachinger Gallery in East Geelong on April 9 to proudly accept his award from Mr Flanigan.
Certified art therapist, Sue Ross, who also carries a diploma in disability service, has been working with Jamie for two years, and said she had witnessed a profound change in him, including improved social wellbeing, an increased connection to others, a feeling of belonging and a shared identity in the community.
“Engaging in the creative and therapeutic arts has given Jamie a channel for expressing emotions, which has increased his abilities to explore physiological and behavioural responses,” she said.
Ms Ross also said that the recognition in ArtX Regional 2024 was a fantastic reward for Jamie’s efforts.
“Winning the Provincial Media Award for his contribution in the arts community is a huge highlight, not only for Jamie, but also his community and tribe,” she said.
Ms Ross thanked genU for coordinating ArtX, and giving an opportunity to Jamie and other Studio44Chaucer artists, including Lilly Lougheed, Brooke Taylor, Duncan Stanhope, Mason Laurence and Kate Mutch to explore creative expression through art, which empowers and boosts self-esteem.
ArtX Regional 2024 exhibition will be open with artwork available for sale at the Eastern Hub, Rachinger Gallery, 285A McKillop St, East Geelong from 9am-4pm on weekdays until Wednesday, April 23.
