Parking meters concerns: council response pending

SOME retailers in Hamilton’s CBD have said that the recent activation of the new parking meters was contributing to a downturn in trade.

The Hamilton Regional Business Association (HRBA) has subsequently written to the Southern Grampians Shire Council on behalf of CDB retailers requesting their removal or consideration of changes.

The letter stated, the continued delays of the Cox Street Redevelopment Project, and rising cost of living pressures was “creating a perfect storm of negative impacts on local traders”.

HRBA president, Michael Byrne said that the parking meters were potentially contributing to a wider downturn in CBD trade.

“There are certainly increased challenges in business activity throughout the region,” he said.

“This may also be due to a wider economic downturn, and cost of living pressures contributing to a downturn in business in some sectors.

“HRBA is listening to the traders, we understand their concerns regarding the parking meters but there are also wider forces at play including the challenges of the new protocols.

“We look forward to further discussions with council on this matter.”

SGSC said they were currently considering a response.
