Historic courthouse tour opportunity

MACARTHUR Historical Society along with collaborators are pleased to be running the first Historic Country Courts Car Tour Weekend later this month for law and history enthusiasts that will be granted the opportunity to visit three historical courthouses in the region.

Penshurst, Macarthur and Port Fairy courthouse museums will all collaborate and open their doors for a fun and remarkable weekend of car touring.

The weekend will consist of a leisurely drive in the vicinity of vineyard lunches and cottage accommodation, where attendants will have the opportunity to stand in the dock and bring the courtroom to life.

Macarthur History Society event organiser, Wendy Ginter said the weekend is a part of the Victorian Law Week programme and will allow locals and visitors to learn about the history of the court houses.

“People can experience a preserved historic courtroom, with a preserved timber magistrate bench, be a clerk of court, step into the dock and relive what it may have been like to be part of a historic court case,” she said.

“I imagine everyone would be interested in the history of law in Victoria.”

Ms Ginter also said there is a range of accommodation and food options available on the Macarthur Museum website for visitors to explore the variety and taste of the Western Victoria region.

“You can stay a night in one of the towns and go around to all three and compare and contrast what it may have been like in each courtroom,” she said.

“It is great for those who fancy a weekend away of heritage tourism.”

The event will be held on May 25-26 from 11am-4pm, and the cost is $24 per vehicle.

“So, bring along a carload, and that $24 gets entry for all passengers into the three towns,” Ms Ginter said.

All bookings can be made through net banking, where name, car registration and contact number must be included with the payment via the Macarthur Museum website at bit.ly/4aV8MHj
