A HAMILTON man who has already served three years pre-sentence for the brutal bashing of another Hamilton man in 2021, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with a non-parole period of six years and 10 months.
Wayne Dennert, 58, was found guilty during an earlier trial in the Warrnambool County Court trial of intentionally causing serious injury to Brendan Nancarrow. He pleaded not guilty in October, 2023.
A witness who said he saw Dennert repeatedly beating a victim with a metal pole in the attack, said it was one of the most brutal things he had ever seen.
The court previously heard from a witness who described hearing screams for help from the victim, who was left with multiple broken bones after he had been attacked by Dennert.
The witness was staying with his family at the Hamilton Caravan Park in Shakespeare Street during April 2021 when he witnessed the accused standing over Mr Nancarrow holding a metal pole.
Dennert said he acted in self-defence when he believed Mr Nancarrow was breaking into his caravan, however, in sentencing Judge Rosemary Carlin said Dennert’s claim was “complete nonsense”.
Mr Nancarrow suffered long term injuries and had experienced difficulty writing his own name or shaking someone’s hand since the assault.
