THERE is a considerably large pumpkin hanging around the GardenLife Nursery, and its name is Nefertiti.
It is an atlantic giant pumpkin grown by Portland resident Catherine Francis, who has named it after the Ancient Egyptian queen of the 18th Dynasty, Nefertiti.
Ms Francis said she ordered the pumpkin seeds online.
“I put it in a little pot in my hothouse, and germination can take up to two weeks then up she comes. So, I nurtured her in my hot house for a little while,” she said.
“Then I put her outside, so she gets used to being in the weather and strengthens up.
“We have a yoga studio several doors down from here (GardenLife Nursery) and out the back I've got spare land, and I've got a vegetable garden there.
“I had the soil ready because pumpkins like a nice rich soil and off we went.”
The pumpkin has recently been relocated to GardenLife Nursery, where customers can make a guess at how much it weighs, and here’s a clue; it’s between 40 to 90 kilograms.
A donation is required to make a guess, and the funds will be forwarded to the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program at Portland North Primary School.
The winning guess will receive a $30 GardenLife gift voucher.
The kitchen garden program will use the funds however they see fit, whether that’s for new equipment, soil or seeds for the next season.
