Second last to ‘tap out’

FOLLOWING on from a story in The Spectator on May 1 regarding Cavendish resident Suzan Muir who appeared on SBS’ Alone Australia series, the last episode screened Wednesday night which revealed Ms Muir as the second-last contender from the original 10.

Alone Australia Series 2 was a 10-part documentary filmed in Te Waipounamu, Aotearoa (South Island, New Zealand), with 10 competitors pitted against each as they vied for $250,000 in prize money.

The participants were completely isolated from the world, and each other, stripped of modern possessions, contact and comforts, to self-document their experience as they try to be the last one standing.

With no camera crews or help from the production team, they had to fend for themselves, sourcing food, water, shelter, and warmth using only their wits.

The challenges the competitors faced were the merciless forces of nature, hunger, and possibly the toughest challenge of all - loneliness.

Ms Muir lasted nine weeks enduring, starvation, relentless rain, snow, freezing subantarctic fronts, roaring forties’ winds and the always imminent threat of avalanches, earthquakes, and landslides.

Before officially tapping out and making the call to the SBS producers, on screen, Ms Muir thanked the land for sustaining her for 63 days.

“Thank you for the food that I foraged from you,” she said.

“And land, I release you.

“It’s time to go.

“Home to the land of Vegemite sandwiches.”

Ms Muir said she endured incredible hunger.

“I went through incredible frustration, but I think the experience of being here has given me a deeper appreciation of water, food, shelter, and companionship. That’s really all you need to experience joy.”

The full series can be watched on SBS On Demand.
