HAMILTON Police have put the call out for motorists over the long weekend for the King’s Birthday to take extra care with reduced daylight and wintry conditions affecting visibility on our roads.
Collision data has revealed the afternoon period is the most dangerous for motorists over winter - 40 per cent of collisions resulting in injury occur between June and August between 12 noon and 6pm.
Leading senior constable Ben Carroll said it’s usually around school time when there are more cars on the road thus more accidents.
Injury collisions also occur on regional roads most commonly on Saturday between 12 noon and 6pm in winter months. That could be attributable to people travelling to and from local sporting matches.
“Police will be highly visible and enforcing across the King’s birthday weekend,” Ldg Sen Const Carroll said.
“We’re just urging drivers to please stay safe on the roads, slow down and obey the road rules.”
Last year more than 6500 infringement notices were issued across the state.
Operation Regal started 12.01am Friday, June 7 and will finish at 11.59pm on Monday, June 10.
