CALLING all environment lovers interested in helping to plant 2300 native trees.
Southwest Environment Alliance (SEA) is holding a two-day tree planting event in July at 1300 Bridgewater Road, Cape Bridgewater and needs volunteers to start and finish the job.
The project site is 850m long by 20m wide and extends from Bridgewater Road to Knights and Parker Road.
SEA Landcare facilitator Kristy Brewer said planting in winter gave the trees the best chance of survival.
“It is actually quite a workout, so you're not cold for long,” she said. “We take regular breaks (in a marquee or hay shed) and have hot drinks and a barbecue lunch on site to help us keep warm.
“Revegetation can change the face of a rural landscape. Landcare tree plantings days provide a seed source for wildlife in an often-barren landscape and of course shelter for those looking to take refuge.
“Single patches of vegetation on their own are not sufficient to support large populations of wildlife.
“We need networks of habitat throughout the landscape if we want to support wildlife adequately.
“Landcare works with landholders who are interested in reinstating native vegetation on their farms or properties to help reconnect landscapes.
“We can often access funding for the materials we need to deliver the project, but we cannot access funding to pay for people to plant the trees, which is why we need your help.”
Planting days are July 4 and 5 from 9am until 5pm.
Brown stringybark, drooping sheoak, blackwood and prickly Moses are just some of the native seedlings volunteers will be planting.
“The wider you go, the higher the biodiversity outcomes are,” Ms Brewer said.
“Healthy ecosystems support a diverse range of both flora and fauna. Our birds rely on trees with large spreading canopies and dense foliage to hide in for their survival.
“A relatively common resident in the Bridgewater landscape is the rufous bristlebird. These medium-sized birds are often observed running instead of flying especially out in the Cashmore district on roads that have healthy stands of native vegetation.
“If you have never attended a tree planting day and would like to be involved, please register and help us get this project done. No experience is required.”
