THE Wannon Conservation Society will launch a major campaign against planned improvements to the lower Wannon River. The society has circulated two petitions against the plan and will protest to parliamentarians during an inspection of the river on Sunday. Society members said at a protest meeting in Coleraine on Tuesday night the improvement plan would turn the Wannon into a sandy channel and increase erosion. A total of 33 people attended the meeting, which was held in the Coleraine CWA rooms. The conservation society hopes to stir up widespread opposition to the river plan before a meeting of the Glenelg River Improvement Trust in Henty next Wednesday. A meeting was held at Henty in March to consider forming a lower Wannon River trust.

FOR a young Hamilton apprentice caught up in the exhilarating years of Beatlemania, all roads led to Melbourne in June, 1964. So much that he travelled to the city determined to attend the Beatles’ concert at Festival Hall, despite having no ticket. Daryl Parfrey, who is still involved with music, playing rhythm guitar and singing with the Hamilton group ‘Take Five’ remembered the 35th anniversary of the Beatles’ visit to Melbourne this week. “The first time we heard about the Beatles was when we were about 16 and playing (in a band) at Patterson Park Hall. Brian Wythe, who played bass guitar, came in laughing and said he’d just heard a group on the radio called The Beatles.
BRILLIANT defender, Brad Mawson, returns to the Hamilton Imperials side for its vital match against second-placed South Gambier in today’s round of Western Border Football League. Mawson has been sorely missed in the Bulldogs line-up since receiving a three-match suspension as a result of an incident in the round six East Gambier game. His repelling attacks from half-back and continual run up from the ground are key components of the Imperials game plan and his return leaves the Bulldogs full of confidence. However Imperials will lose Josh Carracher, who will return to North Ballarat Rebels, while another youngster, Drew McCaskill, is out injured with a slight cork to his thigh. Half-forward Josh Leech has been picked in the Bulldogs’ under-18 team this week.
