Meet the local gap year students - Willem Mason

HAMILTON’S Willem Mason, 18 has been working in the produce area at Permewans Mitre 10 with plans to study Cyber Security in either Adelaide, Melbourne or Geelong next year.

Willem was born in Warrnambool and moved to Kalgoorlie with his family at the age of two where his dad worked in the mining industry.

14 years later, his family moved to Hamilton where Willem began attending school at Baimbridge College.

Willem commented on improvements he has noticed after moving to Hamilton saying, “the schools are a lot better and there’s a lot more support around the businesses here.”

During his free time, Willem enjoys playing golf in the Parklands and takes pride in looking after his AU Falcon.

“My car’s very special to me,” he said.

“I looked at it (online) when I was 15 and I was going to put down a payment for it and pick it up from the other side of Melbourne, but I looked the next day and someone had already bought it.

“Then a couple of months later it rocks up in the driveway – the parents had bought it for me!

“I was pretty impressed about it.”

Willem also enjoys spending time with his family and on the farm with his grandparents.

After finishing university, he sees himself settling down in Geelong, “It’s got that city vibe same as Melbourne, but it’s still just a rural area,” Willem said.
