The roof is up

PORTLAND Memorial Bowling Club’s new $1 million roof has attracted quite a lot attention, especially as it has neared completion.

The 2000sqm structure was due to be completed by the end of this week, after instalment over several days this week.

Following its completion, electricians will be on site until July 19, then work will begin on resurfacing the green so players can return around mid-August, club chief executive officer Dean Beckman said.

“We’ve had a great weather run so we’re right on schedule,” Mr Beckman said.

“These are pretty exciting times considering from where we’ve come from. A few years back bowls overall wasn’t popular but it’s now booming at many clubs.

The roof structure was designed by Lightweight Structures, which has built 26 of these structures around the country, including Warrnambool City and Colac bowls clubs.

The new roof will make Portland Memorial an all-weather, year-round bowls and entertainment venue.

“Part of our five-year plan includes a new playground, plus extending the clubhouse, a new kitchen, dining area and bar.”
