FIFTY years of service is a feat not many achieve.
Victoria Police and the community recently officially recognised Harrow Police Station’s Leading Senior Constable, Alan Perry who celebrated the occasion after joining the force in 1974 at the age of 16.
Originally from Casterton, Alan spent 26 years of his career at Horsham Highway Patrol before taking the leap in 2017 to be the sole officer at Harrow Police Station.
This week, Victoria Police thanked Alan for his long-term service in a social media post that gained attraction from all over the state.
Being the only police officer in a new town, Horsham’s Senior Sergeant Eddie Malpas said it was “unbelievable” how well Alan is suited to Harrow as someone with “a great, old-fashioned commitment to the people and to making Harrow better, regardless of what uniform he’s wearing at the time.”
“From all of us, thank you Alan for your service and dedication to the Victorian community,” a Victoria Police spokesperson said.
In late March, the Harrow community gathered at the RSL to thank Alan and celebrate his decades of service with Victoria Police.
There were many representatives from the Horsham Police Service and locals who showed up to celebrate the milestone, with a virtual message from the Western Region’s Assistant Commissioner Michael Grainger.
Alan attributed his ability to serve the community for as long as he has, to his wife of 42 years, Julie, his “rock”.
At the celebration, Horsham’s Superintendent Sharon McCory presented Sen Const Perry with an award, and Julie was presented with flowers for her gracious support over his 50 years of service.
It’s no secret that Alan’s community-minded spirit extends outside of his policing duties.
Despite never playing footy himself, Alan has been a past president and life member for Horsham Saints Football Netball Club.
He has been the treasurer and secretary on several committees and has been often seen riding the lawnmower at the local caravan park and recreation reserve.
Although retirement may be on the cards soon, Alan will continue to serve the local community of Harrow as steadfastly as he always has.
