Sheep sculpture forged in steel

HAMILTON’S Craig Goodman, the brilliant mind behind local metal fabricator CJ Sculptures, has recently crafted an incredible sheep sculpture in time for display at this year’s Sheepvention Rural Expo.

The estimated 150-kilogram sculpture made from farrier rasps, motorbike chains, scratch steel and points from seeder plough has been proudly placed in the window of Mr Goodman’s workplace at Taylor Motors Hamilton.

Suprisingly, Mr Goodman is quite new to the craft having only started in September last year after he gathered inspiration travelling England, Scotland and France a few months prior.

“I’ve always had an interest in it,” he said.

“The ideas were always in my head.

“It wasn’t until last year when I was visiting the Louvre in France, seeing all the amazing sculptures around really made me want to give it a go.”

Since then, Mr Goodman has made a range of unique designs including ram skulls, a Viking head, a variety of birds, fish and seahorses as well as his newest edition inspired by the upcoming Sheepvention.

“I’ve always wanted to make a sheep, so I thought, what better time than now right before Sheepvention?” he asked.

Starting out as a hobby, Mr Goodman has had popular demand from pieces he has exhibited in Port Fairy and has also donated some of his work to a charity auction for WaterAid, which helped contribute to a combined total raised from the auction of around $500,000.

He has displayed work at this year’s Cavendish Red Gum Festival and also Blarney Books and Art in Port Fairy, now preparing to display his new sculpture in two weeks at Sheepvention.
