Glitz and glam complimented by some familiar faces

PORTLAND Arts Centre celebrated its 50th anniversary on Saturday night with a whole lot of glitz, glam, feathers, exotic costumes and singing.

Exactly 120 people bought tickets to Shower Songs, a show jam-packed with glamour, burlesque and singalong hits. But it wasn’t only sparkling dresses and tastefully placed tassels, because Portland members of CEMA (Council for Encouragement of Music and the Arts) also took the stage to sing a few tunes.

There were four local acts including a group singalong, a poem written and read by Psy Broom, a performance from Jess Cook, Jan Colliver and Ron Colliver, then lastly, a cover of I'm Too Sexy by Sue Anderson.

The night was filled with plenty of laughs, plenty to eat and sometimes not so plenty of clothes.

PAC coordinator Virginia Winter said many attendees dressed up for the night sticking to the themes shower time, 1974 fashion, gold, living art and karaoke kitsch.

“We had people in their ‘70s gear and people in their bathrobes and lots of gold as well. It was really lovely to have that mix,” she said.

“It was a fantastic night. It was just a joyous occasion for everybody there.”

At the end of the show, people were invited to step up on a smaller stage in the foyer and show off their own talents, by taking part in some karaoke.

“I think everyone who got up there really enjoyed themselves. It was really nice for us having everyone joining in and dancing together,” Ms Winter said.
