Community rallies for Team Lambert

THE climatic conditions could not have been worse for braving the shave, but Team Lambert rallied the troops on Saturday and the Coleraine community responded in bucket loads.

Team Lambert joined the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave when husband, father, brother and uncle, Paschendale farmer, Geoff was diagnosed with a rare adult leukaemia.

The family’s fundraising target has continued to grow and has exceeded every couple of days - the total at time of going to print was at $17,006.

On Saturday, it was time to make those dollars count and in addition to sisters, Jenny Lambert and Val Lawson, Coleraine footy players, Harry Armstrong and Rhyan Menzel, put their hands up to join Team Lambert.

In a surprise announcement, Geoff’s sons, Nicholas and Angus also went under the clippers in the shave, hosted by the Coleraine Football Netball Club.

Jointly commentated by brother-in-law and former livestock agent, John Lawson and footy players, Tyler Gleeson and Bevan McIntosh, the deed was shared among family and friends.

Local hairdresser, Josie Irving provided the weapons for the event and Geoff himself who, despite being a cattle farmer, showed more than a few shearing skills with the clippers.

“It was just truly fantastic,” Jenny said.

“The big audience and the boys jumping on board … it was just fun, and I loved the other young fellas (Coleraine footballers) getting on the microphone to commentate while the boys had their heads shaved.”

In addition to hosting the shave and the local footy match, the broader Coleraine community was also extremely supportive of Team Lambert and former footy club committee member, Geoff, with $1065 dropped into collection buckets on the day and plenty of other funding from around the district.

“There was a raffle donated by Coleraine IGA and the Catching Pen café … that raised over $500 and there were lots of local people that donated online,” Jenny said.

“The generosity of the local community is just incredible.”

The fundraising continues this weekend with a Bunnings barbecue in Leopold, while Geoff awaits the results of tests taken in Melbourne last week, to determine the next course of action in his treatment.
