A COLERAINE district man will be in a three-member wool industry delegation to discuss the firm reserve price controversy with the Minister for Primary Industry, Senator Wriedt, in Canberra this week. Mr John Silcock, from Gringegalgona, says they will meet Senator Wriedt on Thursday night or Friday morning. Mr. Silcock says the Australian Government must give a “yes” or “no” soon on backing the Australian Wool Corporation on its firm reserve price policy. One of the points the delegation will impress strongly on the Minister will be a declaration by many overseas wool processors. Mr. Silcock confirmed at a Hamilton farmers’ meeting of Friday that the processors had declared they would accept a firm reserve auction price of 300 cents a clean kilogram of 21- micron wool combined with rising adjustments to keep pace with inflation.

CASTERTON’S ability to adapt to the boggy conditions on Melville Oval on Saturday allowed it to defeat Imperials by 11 points. Generally, the Casterton players were faster, backed up better, and played in front. The standard of play was quite good considering the poor condition of the ground. Both teams made compulsory changes to the selected sides. Wayne Baker replaced Tim Treloar in the Bulldog line-up, while Smith took Bennett’s place in the Cat’s side. It certainly had its share of the play, but there appeared to be no one able to convert the opportunities. McInerney, Uebergang, Tomkins and Campbell were formidable backline players for the Cats and turned out many promising Imps forward moves.

A FOUR-YEAR rate concession has been granted to a blue gum seedling nursery which will begin operations at the former Southern Grampians shire depot in Hensley Park Rd, Hamilton, later this year. Southern Grampians Shire Council this week agreed to offer the maximum rate holiday to assist the establishment of the new industry which estimates that between nine and 20 jobs will be created over the next few years. And EA Nurseries announced that former Hamilton businessman, Peter Sandow, had become a partner in the Hamilton-based operations, an environmental revegetation company based in South Australia. Mr Sandow, who has a 50 per cent stake in the Victorian nursery, said he expected the large-scale production of blue gum seedlings to start in November this year with high volume-low cost revegetation species available from April next year.
