STUDENTS at St John’s Lutheran Primary School got their hands dirty last Friday by planting 250 trees for National Tree Day.
Native trees were planted on the school property, not only to acknowledge National Tree Day but to provide vegetation to the koalas regularly spotted on the grounds.
Students learned how to care for the trees and the importance of caring for the environment and native animals.
The school had successfully applied for a grant with Planet Ark, who covered the expenses of seedlings and tree guards. Tree diggers were lent by Portland Community Garden.
National Tree Day is facilitated by Planet Ark and is Australia's largest tree planting and nature care event, of which the school participates in every year.
