EXTENDING support for those building careers in the beef industry through their Spring Cattleman’s Bull sale next month is Ben and Samantha Glatz from Glatz’s Black Angus in Branxholme.
The plan is for them to donate the full proceeds of a stud heifer to the Angus Foundation, which was established by Angus Australia to support people to advance in the industry with scholarships, bursaries and education.
Mr Glatz said he felt strongly in offering the heifer for sale, as it would further create “opportunities for young agricultural and cattle enthusiasts”.
“Some of the scholarships they do go to the US, to go and study at university over there, and some have to do development programs within Australia, and lots of different things,” he said.
They will be auctioning Black Angus Adelaide U9sv (SJQ23U9) as Lot 1, with the remainder of the sale to be bulls.
“We don't traditionally sell females in our sales, but in this case, as a donation, we'll make a highlight of it,” Mr Glatz said.
“Black Angus Adelaide U9 is a magnificent stud female selected from our top group of replacement heifers.
“Adelaide U9 expresses true quality of type and strength of pedigree – a real asset for a foundation breeder or an established herd.
“The prestigious Adelaide cow family traces right back to the original Glen Bold Adelaide 6th, born in 1968.
“Adelaide U9’s sire, Karoo Main Event M367 is a genuine cow maker. He is a proven sire, being breed elite for foot structure, positive fat and calving ease. Sons of Main Event have sold to $75,000.”
Naracoorte-based Angus Australia extension manager, Jake Phillips said the Angus Foundation “has been created from voluntary levies from our members and also donation sponsorship”.
“Effectively, what that foundation account does is fund close to $200,000 worth of scholarships, awards and bursaries for young people in the beef industry every year,” he said.
“That could be professional development, could be leadership, it could be scholarships overseas. We've got two to the US at the moment, and one to New Zealand.”
Mr Phillips said the initiative supports people of a wide age range (16-40), due to the wide variation of courses and programs that can benefit the industry.
“Each different opportunity has some different requirements,” he said.
Mr Glatz said they made the decision to support the Angus Foundation to give opportunity for young people, whether from the city or country to gain knowledge, experience and life-long networks in the great industry.
“Today’s youth are the future of our beef industry,” he said.
“What makes this industry so unique is that one does not have to be born into it. For a young person not growing up on a farm, a successful career in our Australian beef industry can literally begin with a little curiosity.
“The crucial next step is having an opportunity to become involved which then drives the passion to gain knowledge, experience, make life-long friends and a successful career.
“Our family are proud first-generation purchasers of farmland and breeders of registered Angus cattle. Our path in the beef industry has been made possible thanks to the early opportunities offered to us by cattle breeders, junior cattle events, Angus Assessment Schools, scholarships and other networking opportunities.”
The family hoped that through this donation, the Angus Foundation may continue to develop and foster young people within the beef industry to reach their full potential, ensuring the continuing of not only the Angus breed into the future, but a sustainable beef industry as a whole.
“The purchaser of Black Angus Adelaide U9sv can also be proud of their own contribution towards youth development for our beef industry,” Mr Glatz said.
“The prospect of a young Angus breeder taking ownership of this outstanding stud female would be very satisfying outcome for us at Glatz’s Black Angus.”
The Glatz Black Angus Spring Bull Sale will take place at ‘Coroona’, 299 Caroona Lane, Branxholme on September 9 at 11am and will be interfaced by AuctionsPlus.
