History written on the walls

AS a tribute to the soldiers and founding members of the Portland Memorial Bowling Club, wallpaper featuring newspaper clippings and other memories has been put up in the building's entryway.

A grant from the Department of Veteran Affairs funded the new wallpaper, put up by Portland Signworks.

Seen on the wall is a newspaper article on the official opening of the club in 1959, and pictures from the Korean War, World War II, and of club members playing bowls.

Board chairperson Meredith Fredericks said it’s been a year in the making.

“We just went through the archives and tried to find suitable photographs,” she said.

“That newspaper story was just when the club was recently formed.

“The photos of the bowlers are in later years.”

One face standing out from the walls is of a previous club member recognised as Sergeant Ryan. The photo was taken during World War II and entered by his daughter who lives in Western Australia.

“She saw our call for photographs of ex-members that might have been in the military,” Mrs Fredericks said.

“These other war pictures were given to us by Vern McCallum.”
