$150m rail project a step closer

UPGRADE project management on the local rail track including replacing the sleepers set to start next month. $150 million was allocated by the Federal Government and the project is expected to take three years. The works will better connect the line to the ARTC freight network by increasing speed and weight limits, and would potentially enable the reintroduction of passenger trains. See story on page 2. THE wheels are slowly moving for the $150 million upgrade to the Maroona to Portland rail line with work on the project expected to begin next month.

Replacing sleepers along the 172-kilometre stretch that runs through Hamilton will enable the lifting of reduced speed and axle load restrictions that are substantially lower than the rest of the standard gauge network and add about two hours travel time to the line.
