$150m rail project a step closer

THE wheels are slowly moving for the $150 million upgrade to the Maroona to Portland rail line with work on the project expected to begin next month.

Replacing sleepers along the 172-kilometre stretch that runs through Hamilton will enable the lifting of reduced speed and axle load restrictions that are substantially lower than the rest of the standard gauge network and add about two hours travel time to the line.
