Sustainability business takes out state award

A LOCAL sustainability business was recently announced the Victorian recipient for the Telstra Best of Business Awards program.

Selected from more than 22,000 nominations nationwide across multiple categories, local business Sustainable Plastic Solutions (SPS) took out the Promoting Sustainability award for Victoria.

The award recognises Australian small businesses, celebrating their achievements and the people behind them, while giving them the opportunity to learn from Australia’s best business minds.

SPS is a local full service, circular economy recycling business that specialises in creating custom resins and closed-loop solutions for large organisations.

The initial nomination for the award came as a surprise for owners Elisha and Matt Nettleton, which was followed by a detailed submission process.

“One of our locals nominated us,” Ms Nettleton said.

“We had to then fill out three parts; I had to agree to the nomination and then complete a written form with yes or no questions.

“Then there was more in-depth written submission talking about our business plan, what we do, how many people we employ, and our future plans.”

Six weeks ago, Mr and Ms Nettleton were deemed semi-finalists and completed an hour-long online interview, which resulted in the business being declared a state finalist.

It wasn’t until two weeks ago that Ms Nettleton received a phone call informing her of the business’ Promoting Sustainability award state win.

“It was a great way to start a Monday,” she said.

“It’s so hard you know who you’re up against.

“It’s really great, I love that it was something we were nominated for by the community.”

On November 18, Mr and Ms Nettleton will attend the Nationals award night in Melbourne to receive their Promoting Sustainability state award and will also find out if they can secure the national award in the same category.

“It’s great to be recognised for doing something sustainable, new and regional,” Ms Nettleton said.

“To be doing what we are doing, where we are doing it, is unique.

“We are super excited for the awards night, and we will be celebrating regardless – a Nationals win will be a bonus.”
