DESPITE being restarted by a technician after the introduction of Daylight-Saving Time, visitors to the CBD late last week may have noticed the post office clock has once again stopped, adding to its recent unreliable history.
Melbourne-based Ingram Time Systems has the responsibility of maintaining many important heritage clocks around Victoria and were aware the iconic Hamilton landmark had a potential problem when they visited last Monday week, but didn’t expect it to reoccur so soon.
Company owner, Will Ekselman said it wasn’t unknown for old clock mechanisms to be a bit sensitive to disturbances and the renovation works finished earlier this year on the building may have inadvertently contributed, but in any case, the fix wasn’t anything serious.
“When we were there, we identified that there was an issue that would require a revisit pretty soon,” he said.
“Obviously with Daylight Saving we’re pretty busy – we offered to come out on a Saturday, but of course, they’re not open on the Saturday so we couldn’t arrange access.”
He said a worker was expected to come to Hamilton again next week and get everything back up and running fully, with his company having a long history of looking after similar clocks, including Flinders Street Station, the General Post Office and many town halls in and around Melbourne.
“We’re clockmakers, and we specialise in historical clocks,” Mr Ekselman said.
“The business was started back in the 1850s. I’m the third generation, (the company) has been in my family for 75 years.”
Mr Ekselman said he was confident the clock will be up and running reliably soon.
“We know what needs to be done to stop it from stopping again,” he said.
