FORTUNATELY, there were no injuries to the drivers of two vehicles that collided at the intersection of Brown Street and Lonsdale Street with one vehicle coming to rest partially in a window of King’s Bakery and Café late Wednesday evening.
It is believed a red Mitsubishi Lancer collided with a blue Honda Jazz at the intersection.
Despite appearances, there was no structural damage to the shop premises.
Hamilton Police constable, Brandon Newton confirmed there were two cars involved, and that the parties were compliant with police who were undertaking an investigation into how the incident occurred.
Hamilton SES were called to assist with the cleanup so that the bakery could open for business on Thursday morning, working alongside emergency services including Ambulance Victoria and local CFA.
Hamilton SES unit controller, Tim Fry said Hamilton SES were paged at 10.45pm Wednesday night.
“A crew of four volunteers worked alongside other emergency service agencies and contractors until 12.30am Thursday morning,” he said.
Owner, Christine Hanks said her husband was out the back of the premises at the time of the accident and phoned her to let her know what had happened.
She thought it was a joke at the beginning but then quickly realised he wasn’t pulling her leg.
“There was lots of SES, CFA, ambulance and the car lodged in the building,” Mrs Hanks said.
“I think the brick wall stopped the car from going any further into the shop.
“There was lots of bricks and lots of dust and bits of car in the shop to clean up.
“The SES were fantastic and helped get rid of all the bricks and the window that was broken – it was just sort of hanging there.”
Mrs Hanks said SES stayed late until the scene was cleared enough to open the following morning.
She said a friend who is a builder, Rod Gorrie, came in and helped board up the opening where the car hit the wall and window.
“He did a fantastic job – if it wasn’t for him, we probably wouldn’t have been able to open,” she said.
Mrs Hanks said the next stop was an insurance claim.
She said everyone at King’s Bakery and Café was extremely grateful for the help they received cleaning up after the incident.
“We’re just happy no one got hurt.”
