New team at the top for Glenelg

NEWLY Re-elected mayor Karen Stephens is “looking forward to getting down and working with the team” as she enters her second consecutive year as mayor of the Glenelg Shire.

All councillors were present at Wednesday’s statutory council meeting and were all in favour of electing Cr Stephens into the role.

Cr Michael Carr made the first and only nomination for Cr Stephens to fill the role of Mayor, which was seconded by Cr Robyn McDonald.

Cr Stephens kept her speech as newly-elected mayor short and sweet.

“This is the first public opportunity that I've had to congratulate each of my fellow councillors on being elected to what was a historic election, with a total of four new councillors joining the council table, and together with our new CEO, we have a great team and great promise ahead,” she said.

“We have some very exciting projects coming our way, which will provide unprecedented growth, opportunities and jobs for future generations.

“This council will lead the visioning and planning for the period of growth, and together with our community, we will navigate the challenges and ensure the best possible outcomes will be achieved for our community.”

Cr Stephens was quick to praise the amazing staff that help to deliver over 120 services to the community on a daily basis.

Next on the agenda was the election of Deputy Mayor, with Cr Robyn McDonald voted into the role.

The next Council meeting is to be held in Portland on Tuesday, November 26.
