THIEVES have brazenly stolen a trailer from an address in Fyfe Street, Hamilton in the early hours of last Sunday morning and used it to steal five motorbikes locally worth more than $30,000.
Detective Sergeant Mark James of the Hamilton police crime investigation unit said a galvanized silver tandem eight by five-foot trailer fitted with a cage was stolen during a three-minute time window between 2.51am and 2.54am on Sunday.
The offence was captured on CCTV but police are wanting anyone else that may have footage that shows the vehicle leaving the area to please come forward.
“It was a white dual cab tub ute but the brand and rego were not visible,” Det Sgt James said.
“CCTV is vital to catching who was responsible, every new bit of CCTV gives a slightly different angle and can help piece together what has happened.”
Det Sgt James said the ute and trailer were then used to steal five motorbikes from Watt Bros Motorcycles & Power Equipment dealership on Portland Road, Hamilton.
“This is believed to have happened shortly after the trailer was stolen,” he said.
“The bikes were trail bikes, two red Hondas; a Honda CRF 250 and Honda CRF 450 – there was also a green Kawasaki KX 250, a yellow Suzuki DRZ 400 and an orange and white KTM300.”
He said the thieves were opportunistic – stealing the trailer and then using it to steal the motorbikes.
“Crooks notice things differently to everyone else,” he said.
“Obviously the trailer was stolen to transport the motorbikes.
“We know that there were at least two offenders.”
“We’ve got a fair bit of CCTV already that we’re still working on.
“The Dunkeld Races were on, and we know that there may have been people out and about late on Saturday night that may have seen something.
“Every small bit of information really helps.
“We’re still seeking CCTV from the Fyfe Street, Lodge Road area so if anyone has any footage or information to please get in touch with Hamilton Police or Crime Stoppers.”
