Walk against family violence

NEXT Saturday, November 30, is Hamilton Rotary’s, Walk Against Domestic and Family Violence.

The walk will start from the Hamiton Botanic Gardens at 10am and wind through Hamilton’s CBD arriving at the Hamilton PAC at 10.30am with guest speakers to address those in attendance as well as a free sausage sizzle.

Hamilton Rotary subcommittee chair, Kevin Safe was promoting the opportunity for the community to get involved and join the walk to help raise awareness about what is going on in the community.

He said it was part of the 16 days of Activism against Gender Based Violence which is an international campaign that runs from November 25 to December 10.

“Hamilton Rotary – our big message is to say, ‘no to domestic violence’ and ‘yes to respectful relationships’.

“That’s the message we’re trying to get through to the community,” he said.

“It’s a walk against domestic violence – the purpose of it is to make the community aware of the problem in our community and hear what is going on.

“We’re continuing the important conversation that we began last year.

“Domestic and family violence is never okay – it is preventable and together we can make a difference.

“Participants are encouraged to wear a splash of purple to show support.

“We’ve got local police, the hospital and council are all part of the event.”

Upon arrival at the Hamilton PAC, guest speakers including the recently elected new Southern Grampians Shire Council (SGSC) mayor, Dennis Heslin, Western District Health Service chief executive, Rowena Clift, and Hamilton Police Acting Sergeant Chris Thompson will address pertinent topics.

“The information from the police will provide a greater understanding of what is happening in our local community in relation to domestic violence,” Mr Safe said.

Fellow Hamilton Rotary subcommittee member, Jenny Hurse said a lot of people wonder if it really is happening in our community.

“It is important to note that domestic violence is not just physical abuse,” Ms Hurse said.

“It can be coercive control, financial, emotional, psychological and sexual.”

She said Hamilton Rotary would like to extend gratitude to SGSC for partnering with them to facilitate the event.

“Additionally, we acknowledge the crucial support provided by frontline agencies including Women’s Housing Inc, Orange Door, and Emma House which play a pivotal role supporting those affected by domestic violence.”

Mr Safe asked that participants assemble together at 10am at the Hamilton Botanic Gardens for the walk.

He said the Hamilton & District Pipe Band would then lead the procession and said anyone who cannot join the walk was encouraged to join the event at the Hamilton PAC for the free sausage sizzle.

“The Hamilton Pipe Band will add vibrant colour and energy to our walk,” Mr Safe said.

“We encourage everyone to stay for a free barbecue provided by the SGSC and Rotary as we continue to strengthen our community bonds and commitment to this cause.”

He said other towns have been involved in the event over the years.

“This is the first time we are doing a walk in Hamilton,” Mr Safe said.

“It promises to be a show of respect for those victims of domestic violence.

“Together let’s strive for a safer more respectful community for everyone.”
