CASTERTON Sandford’s Limestone Coast Women’s Football League team enters a unique chapter in the club’s history this month, when they become the first female Cats’ side to represent the club in a grand final at league level.
After keeping the league’s unbeaten minor premiers scoreless in the final home and away round, the Cats returned to Island Park at the weekend where they took on Kongorong to play for a fast-track into the B Division grand final.
The Cats dominated all four quarters and had it not been for some inaccurate kicking at goals, the winning margin could have been far greater than the 100 points recorded at the final siren.
In another outstanding performance for the Cats, Scarlett Jarrad joined sister Gaby Sullivan, rotating through the forward line to provide a focus in the absence of Alyssa Humphries and did not disappoint, the stalwart picking up seven goals for the day.
Reflecting on the season, Jarrad said she was “a little bit disappointed” the team didn’t finish in the league’s division one roster, with inconsistency in player numbers early in the season, costing the Cats at the pointy end.
“The way we’ve developed and improved to come together at the end of the season is just unreal and I think we could have probably finished higher, if we’d just had the consistent team then,” she said.
“The thing that (coach Pete Hutchins) has really worked on is that game awareness, that knowledge of where to be and where not to be, in the play and that’s one of the hardest things you need to learn as a footballer.
“It’s been really good to have a consistent, larger turn up and training and have Pete’s direction to practice those things that you can put into practice on match day.
“It’s a really good outcome that everyone has now got their set roles, like Chloe (Finnegan) and Emma (Lynch) swapping in and out of the ruck.
“Everyone has really improved out of sight, now they have their own roles.”
She said the girls were pumped to have played their first home final and be heading over to Penola on 24 April, for their first grand final.
