NUMBERS increased slightly in Hamilton last week, with 239 cattle put forward, including 172 cows, 52 trade and 15 bulls and the usual buyers were present and operated to good competition.
The week saw breed and line quality pick up within the trade run, which as a result saw improved prices across most weights.
Light weight steers less than 350 kilograms peaked at 502c/kg, whilst a nice pen of Angus steers over 350kg returned 580c/kg.
Good feed on Shorthorn x steers at 505kg topped at 496c/kg to meet stronger demand due to quality and numbers.
Heavy Bullocks over 600kg again sold to a dearer trend to reach 388c/kg.
Light weight heifers sold to a high of 498c/kg, whilst medium weights peaked at 420c/kg.
Once again, cow numbers were solid and covered all weights and grades to finish firm on the lighter cows and slightly cheaper on the heavy beef cows.
Heavy cows ranged from 295-338 c/kg to processors and again, store conditioned cows sold to keen competition, with the pick returning 358c/kg.
Bulls remained firm on the previous week’s rates, with the best of the heavy weights reaching 313c/kg and averaging 301c/kg, whilst the light weights less than 700kg met slightly stronger demand to peak at 300c/kg and average 280c/kg.
