Young farmers tested on trivia

SOUTH-WEST dairy farmers put their thinking caps on and their general knowledge to the test at the WestVic Dairy Young Dairy Network (YDN) Trivia Night on Friday, September 2.

The Timboon Golf Club was buzzing with more than 130 quiz participants, making it the biggest night in the four years that it has been running in the current format.

Young farmers and service providers were grouped into 16 tables to compete against each other across eight rounds of 10 questions.

Local radio identity Garry Ross donated his time as Quizmaster, entertaining the crowd throughout the night.

Questions ranged from ‘guess this song’ to curly anatomy brain teasers, with a few farming questions thrown in for good measure.

Did you know the most grown crop in the world is Maize? Around half the room did!

Proud to be a Dairy Farmer came on board as the key sponsor for 2022, which allowed for all proceeds to be donated to charity, and just under $4000 was raised between the entry tickets and raffle ticket sales.

These proceeds were split between BlazeAid and Need for Feed, two very deserving charities who have supported our region over the years of drought and fire. Both charities have been busy assisting fellow farmers in NSW to recover from the devastating floods earlier in the year, and will no doubt put the money raised to good use.

The support from local businesses across the region was significant, with a great range of donated prizes won by upwards of 50 attendees on the night. Everything from farm equipment, semen vouchers, meat packs, and even day spa vouchers were on offer.

The competition for first place was fierce, with only around 10 points separating the top team from the bottom for most of the night. A calculation error in the midway scores saw the Timboon Vet Group table almost robbed of their back-to-back victory. However, their rightful win was recognised on a recount.

Runners up for the night were the Coprice group, with their young nutritionists proving their book smarts on the night. Whilst a few of the tables showed great promise earlier in the evening, perhaps too many visits to the bar created a distraction along the way!

All in all, a great night was had by many young farmers and service providers alike. To see so much talent, enthusiasm and passion for the dairy industry in one room was a wonderful experience.

Everyone can now look forward to an even bigger event next year, as the Timboon Vet Group see if they can pull off a hat trick!
